Every year, one global cuisine is chosen as the nation’s favourite. Over the last few years, our taste buds have been taken to Japan, Morocco and most of the South-East Asian peninsula. Well, I’m happy to stick my neck out and say that 2002 should be the year of Afghan food. And where do I base this idea? Not on an assessment of the international geo-political situation, but on a visit to the Afghan Kitchen in Islington.

Take a two hour holiday in Aix en Provence. It’s strange sometimes the things that can make you feel you are in a foreign country. Immediately after being seated at Aix en Provence, a French couple at a nearby table was engaged in a very serious wine service discussion...

Curious, isn’t it, how – and why – people come up with names for restaurants. There are address names (190 Queensgate), descriptive names (Parisienne Chop House), all of which are crystal clear. But then there are the puzzlers and Amber....

I’ve never been one for the “don’t judge a book by its cover” school of thought. And judging by the appearance of Babylon, I’m not alone. This restaurant has got its first impression down pat: sleek, expensive and sophisticated.

The bar was doing brisk business but the large dining room was virtually deserted when we arrived in the early evening. That’s not usually a good sign but any alarm bells were quickly dispelled – firstly by the food itself and secondly by the fact that within forty minutes every single table was taken.
