Indian restaurants across London may be shedding any trace of Indian-ness, but Chor Bizarre flaunts it with a dining room crammed full of art and artefacts, silver-leafed chairs, pietra dura tables, carved lattice jarokas, and even a canopied bed, which are all for sale. This style is dictated by the restaurant's name meaning “thieves market”. Chor Bizarre is the London branch of a Delhi restaurant, and though the food crosses all India it places a real emphasis on Kashmiri cuisine, prepared by a Punjabi Sikh chef. Gilouti kebabs are meltingly tender lamb and good street snacks like chaat or tak-a-tak (bitter gourd, chicken liver or crab cooked on a tawa). Try the favourite Kashmiri vegetables, lotus root or haaq (spinach) and the classic goshtaba (tender lamb kofte cooked in seasoned yoghurt). Good southern chicken Chettinad. Worthwhile breads and biryani. Agreeable service and wines chosen by Charles Metcalfe.
