Previously The English House, this revived classic is now under the aegis of Richard Corrigan (Lindsay House) with a clean, minimal but inviting look using interesting materials like strips of slate on the walls. Corrigan’s rus in urbe style of cooking is present in a satisfying mix of good country ingredients, often mixing fish and meat, to often stunning effect. Look for confit duck and dandelion salad with a prune and foie gras butter, or cream of chorizo soup with a poached oyster. Mains continue in a similar vein with honey roast bacon, buttered cabbage and parsley sauce or roast wood pigeon accompanied by a surprising sweet potato and butternut squash ravioli. Poached plums are not seen frequently enough and here their richly red sensuousness is well complemented by a frangipane base and vanilla mascarpone. Good wines and engaging service.
