Shillibeers

Links

Caledonian Road is Islington’s Coronary Mile, a great big homage to kebabs, chips and fried chicken. There is however an alternative to this ‘grease-to-go’, that doesn’t involve a trip down Upper Street.

Situated down an anonymous, unlit street, Shillibeers comes as a bit of a surprise, with its Boston lobster shack look, all-wood interior, open kitchen and lovely glass facade.

Given the culinary reputation of the area, expectations were not high, but the menu, while not adventurous (soup of the day, rib eye steak, etc) is good, and well presented.

The Fillet Steak served in a Green Peppercorn Sauce (£13.50) was enormous, but very lean and was served with big chunky chips. Chargrilled Seabass with Lemon and Olive Oil Dressing (£10.50) was fresh and uncomplicated like it ought to be. The wine list is adventurous too, embracing the usual regions plus varieties from Lebanon and Mexico.

Shillibeers isn’t trendy or particularly sophisticated, but it offers a good meal in an area where the height of gastronomy is defined as garlic sauce on your doner.
