Rightly hailed as one of London’s best gastropubs soon after its launch, this Clerkenwell stalwart keeps things on a lively keel with a regularly changing menu. The beauty of the food here is that it almost goes against the grain of most gastropubs which seem to be hell-bent these days in favouring British ingredients and resolutely British flavours. Nothing much wrong with that but boy, is it insular! All the more pleasing then that The Peasant takes a more global approach and does it well. Grilled scallops with avocado puree, shallot and ginger dressing and pepper, is a superbly rendered combination of well-matched ingredients. The confit of duck with wok-fried nectarine, mange tout and cassava chips, also rises admirably to the occasion magnificently. Everything has a sprightly fresh taste and none more so than the simple side salad of watermelon, feta and basil. As if all that weren’t enough get ready to round off with a gorgeously handsome pudding of mango, pomegranate and
