In an age when Italian-style fast food means having a quick plate of pizza or pasta, Vapiano takes things one step further and makes things fun and well, practically interactive.
The idea being for diners that you have an RFID (radio-frequency identification) chip card, which you wave when queuing up on one of the food counters to order items and then wave again at the register when exiting for the bill to appear. All very high-tech and easy, but the real fascination with Vapiano comes from the fact that you not only queue up yourself at the counter to order from the gamut of pizzas and pasta dishes â even mixing matching flavours with the excellent salads here - but that itâs all freshly made right in front of you.
Whatâs more is that a number of the fresh green vegetables are grown on site and the pasta made fresh on site too.
Highlights from the menu include the strawberry and spinach salad â certainly a âwowâ partnership here and it works along with the nicely rendered insalata reefân beef salad. However, salads aside, the rest of the menu does have rather a modicum of familiarity about it. Of course, thatâs not necessarily a bad thing.
So from the list of pastas and even pizzas youâll find all your favourites and thereâs a good variety to choose from. If there is one quibble though with the food and perhaps we just made some of the wrong selections â itâs simply that flavours tend to be rather restrained, verging almost on the bland.
Prices are reasonable and on the whole this really is a great place â with three branches in London (Soho being the latest) so far - to go to with friends and just soak up the lively atmosphere.
